Remembering Moonah Maaye Turay
September 6, 1968—February 17, 2026
“The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor scrip for your journey, neither coats, neither shoes, nor yet stave: for the worker is worthy of his keep. And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. And when ye come into a house, salute it. And if the house be worth, let your peace come upon it: but if it not be worth, let your peace return to you.” (Matthew 10: 7-13)
Our mother Moonah Mayae Turay has passed away after a long and courageous battle with sickle cell disease. She was a passionate educator, a tireless advocate for children, immigrants and the elderly, and a deeply spiritual woman whose faith allowed her to see the good in everyone. The deluge of condolences from Molokai to the Persian Gulf is no small testament to the beauty and joy and lightness she wrought. Grief is global. Grief is local. Our loss is fractured and compounded by the challenges of the world. As we receive the tremendous outpouring of support from our community, our hearts are with everyone in the world fighting the good fight.
